Beginners Guide to Edibles

beginners guide to edibles

Edibles can be a little intimidating in the beginning if you’re not sure how they work. With so much information about weed edibles online, it can be hard to know what source to trust. That’s why as cannabis connoisseurs, we’ve compiled our best tips for beginners, so you feel confident and excited to try out cannabis edibles for yourself!

Cannabinoid Ratios (CBD vs THC)

Before we jump into the fun stuff, we need to address some of the nitty-gritty details. Cannabinoid ratios are something you’ll come across when buying edibles. Essentially, they tell you the amount of CBD and THC that are in an edible.

If you’re still not following, CBD and THC are both cannabinoids that are found in cannabis but have very different qualities. CBD is non-psychoactive and THC is psychoactive based on how they interact with the cannabinoid receptors. It’s good to understand how the ratio works so that you understand the effects you can expect when taking that edible.

Here are some common ratios found in weed edibles:

  • CBD:THC - 0:1 - These strains contain only THC which some people enjoy for the euphoric and happy effects you can get. On the flip side, THC only sometimes creates unwanted effects such as anxiety or paranoia.

  • CBD:THC - 1:2 - With this ratio, you’ll still feel high from the edible but are less likely to experience the unwanted effects that come with THC because it’s paired with some CBD to balance it out.

  • CBD:THC - 1:1 - This ratio is commonly used when treating a range of conditions medicinally such as insomnia, autism and cancer. It offers a relaxed state with a minimal high to keep you calm.

  • CBD:THC - 2:1 - If you’re looking for a ‘barely there’ high and mostly a relaxed and effect from an edible, this ratio is great. It’s perfect for those who may be sensitive to THC or have a low tolerance.

  • CBD:THC - 1:0 - As you may be able to guess, this ratio won’t make you high. With that being said, CBD is used to treat many conditions and unpleasant sensations such as muscle aches and will leave you in a generally good mood.

Edible Potency

No two edibles are made the same so a brownie that your cousin made won’t be the same as a gummy you buy from a licensed dispensary these days. Cannabis companies are now required to put their products through multiple rounds of testing to ensure what is labeled on the packaging, is exactly what you’re consuming. How high you will get, is no longer a guessing game, just read the label and the COAs.

It’s important to bear in mind the amount of THC in edibles when making a purchase decision, the higher the THC, the higher the psychoactive effects you’ll experience.

Onset Time

If you only take one thing away from this blog, let it be this. Weed edibles can take a while to enter the bloodstream and the time which it takes for you to feel its full effects will vary. Not only will it vary from person to person, but it also depends on how much food is in your system already.

As a general rule of thumb, it takes approximately 60-90 minutes to feel the effects of an edible. With that being said, we highly recommend waiting 90 minutes before you decide to consumer another edible and risk getting a little too high.

Benefits of Edibles

There are many benefits to consuming weed in the form of edibles, rather than smoking it or using other methods.

  • Know your dose - It’s more challenging to know how much you’re consuming when you’re smoking, for example. With edibles, you know the amount of THC, CBD etc and can up the dose when you feel you need more.

  • Stronger effects - Weed edibles are known to hit harder than smoking weed or consuming it other ways but why is that? It’s because after it’s made its way through your body and reaches your stomach, it’s metabolized into 11-Hydroxy-THC. 11-Hydroxy-THC allows the edible to work its way to the brain much easier than it normally would.

  • Long lasting - Compared to smoking and vaping the effects are much longer. You can expect the high to last at least a few hours.

  • Great taste - Let’s face the facts, edibles taste great, especially THC gummies! Our favorite sativa gummies are our Classic Sour Watermelon, for indica gummies it’s Blackberry Lemonade, and for hybrid gummies we’d have to go with Clementine!
