What is CBD?
CBD is a cannabinoid, one of the over 100 unique organic chemicals (typically referred to as compounds) produced by the cannabis plants. CBD, short for cannabidiol, is the second most prevalent active ingredient with THC being the most popular.
People often confuse CBD with THC, as they both derive from cannabis. With that being said, they have very different properties and deliver very different effects. THC is psychoactive which means that when consuming THC, you will feel ‘high’. CBD is different in that it’s non-psychoactive meaning you won’t feel high when consumed.
Cannabis Derived vs Hemp-Derived CBD
Since CBD can be derived from both cannabis and hemp plants, you may be wondering if there’s a difference between the two. In short, there are a few differences between how CBD is derived affects whether or not it’s considered legal.
Hemp-derived CBD has less than 0.3% THC, is federally legal and won’t lead to intoxication. CBD producted derived from Hemp are readily available an sold online, grocery stores to gas stations.
CBD derived from the cannabis plant is treated differently and is only used for CBD-rich cannabis products like gummies, topicals, balms, tinctures etc. Purchasing this type of CBD is much more restricted and can only be purchased through a legal dispensary in states that have legalized marijuana.
