The entourage effect is a term that’s been thrown around the cannabis community for years but what exactly does it mean? Today we’re looking at the different cannabis compounds that create this effect, how it happens and the possible benefits you can enjoy.

Cannabis Compounds

Before we explore the exact meaning, it’s important to have a solid understanding of the compounds that are responsible for this effect. Cannabinoids and terpenes are found in both cannabis and hemp (non-psychoactive) plants. They affect how humans’ brains and bodies react to the substance.

There are many different cannabinoids within cannabis but the most commonly referred to as cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Of all the cannabinoids, CBD and THC are found at a much higher percentage within cannabis. They’re responsible for relaxing (CBD) and psychoactive (THC) effects in the brain and body.

Terpenes, on the other hand, are oils that the plant’s trichomes secrete. They’re most often discussed in relation to their effect on the taste and scent of cannabis strains. For example, one terpene might give off a sweet, floral scent and another might have a skunkier and stronger aroma and taste. It’s important to note that terpenes also play a role in the overall effect you experience when consuming cannabis. Terpenes also have the potential to deliver therapeutic benefts when combined with other cannabis compounds.

What is the Entourage Effect?

The entourage effect refers to the effect that occurs when specific compounds within cannabis act when combined together. The name was coined by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam and Shimon Ben-Shabat after a study in 1999.

One of the most common examples that prove this effect is combining cannabinoids such as THC and CBD. You see, on its own, THC is great for reducing pain but it can also have negative effects such as an onset of anxiety or increased heart rate. CBD on its own can aid anxiety and lift depression but does not create an intoxicating high.

When mixed together, THC and CBD can provide the best of both worlds. Depending on the results you’re looking for, you can try different CBD to THC ratios.

Benefits of the Entourage Effect

As you can imagine there are many benefits of the entourage effect, some of which include:

  • Reducing/Eliminating Anxiety

  • Help Treat Inflammation

  • Pain Management
