What makes a great night of sleep? 

First let’s lift up the covers to understand how our bodies sleep. There are 4 stages of sleep that we cycle through several times during a typical night:

  • N1 - the dooze-off stage that takes us from awake to sleep.  

  • N2 - the light sleep stage we slip into before we enter deeper sleep. 

  • N3- the luscious deep sleep stage we need to feel refreshed in the morning. 

  • REM- the intermittent sleep stage that occurs every 90 minutes or so.  (Most of your dreaming occurs during REM sleep).

Some nights are better than others because how long we stay in each stage varies night by night.

Unfortunately, many of us have trouble sleeping. 

Almost 50 million people in the US suffer from insomnia. In fact, a recent study published in the journal of Sleep Medicine noted a 37% increase in the rates of clinical insomnia since the COVID pandemic! So it's no surprise that one of the top things people look for when they walk into a dispensary is something to help them sleep. Especially right now. 

So, what does cannabis have to do with sleep? 

Avid cannabis users have long touted the sleep-inducing benefits of cannabis. But we’re really excited about the latest science that backs up those claims! Recent research has shown a relationship between cannabis, our endocannabinoid system (the receptors in our brain that react to the cannabinoids) and our body’s natural circadian rhythm (those sleep stages we just talked about).
